Famous in Eventing Magazine

Eventing Mag arrived this morning and I flicked through it quickly, I read the News updates, plus an article about Bruce Haskell and of course Louise Harwoods fab diary. I couldn't help thinking that with my string of very baby horses I mustn't get my hopes up about being mentioned in any reports or results this coming year.

Then late this afternoon my Texts, Twitter and Facebook started going crazy as people started letting me know I was on the main page of the Guide to The 2015 season.

I still can't believe it and can't thank Eventing Mag enough for choosing this photo, I have to keep checking that it's really me and the lovely Hartpury Take It 2 The Top taking up a whole page!!!!

Popart home from Being Broken in.

The lovely Popart is home from being broken in.  So far I have ridden Popart 3 times and he has been an absolute saint. Very green as expected but hacking out quietly and he seems very easy.

Since writing the above a week has passed and I have hacked Popart out and been to a small show, he has been perfectly behaved, he's really forward and sensible for such a young horse.

Allens Hill Arena Eventer Training

I took two horses to this event Timeforasharpexit (Rupert) and Rif Raf The Dragon.

The course was super for them, Timeforasharpexit jumped his first corner and his first water tray. Rif Raf jumped a double clear round the 90 and finished in 2nd place, while Timeforasharpexit finished in 3rd, he led after dressage with an amazing score of 26 but a SJ fault dropped him down the placings.

The horses have been XC schooling this week and they are just about ready for their first BE event next month. They are all still green and you will probably see lots of kicking to get them in the water and maybe a slight wobble at the ditches etc!!!

My lovely 5 year old Middleton is advertised for sale at the moment, (jumping a ditch below) as I am sadly cutting back on my competition horses for 2015 due to our impending house move, which is costing a huge amount of £ as the new house is being completely gutted and renovated. There are lots of videos of Middleton on utube, he is a super horse, ha has amazing paces, a loveLy jump, hacks on his own and is a really easy sweet horse in every way. So far he has won 2 Novice dressage comps and also been placed 2nd at his first ODE. A superstar in the making.

International Eventing Forum

Had a really entertaining and educational day at Hartpury watching and learning from the worlds top coaches training 4* riders.

Morning Session - Dressage

Sam Griffiths and Nicky Roncoroni were the morning guinea pigs for coach Christoph Hess. We watched in awe as both horses improved during the session. Sam said his horse suffered from losing marks due to tension. Christoph used exercises to encourage the horse to open and stretch its neck, his horse began to relax and soften, showing off his lovely paces. Next up was Nicky she said her horse was hard to ride in a test. Her horse came in with his poll too low and looking like the front and back end were not from the same horse. Christoph worked on the connection by getting Nicky to canter with her reins in one hand, by the time Christoph had finished with them Nicky was riding a fully connected horse, if someone had told me Nicky had swapped horses half way through I would have believd them, the difference was incredible. It was amazing lesson to witness.

Afternoon Jumping

Andrew Nicolson was honest and open, explaining to us the various weaknesses of each of his 4 demo horses. He gave us a fascinating insight into his schooling methods which he uses to improve the horses way of going. All his jump schooling exercises I already use at home, Although some of them I haven't set out for a while so it inspired me to come home and set them all out for this years new team of horses to work on. Also on his plank exercise he used an extra plank so the curving line becomes a 10 metre loop off the track and back with jumps, I have always used this but only with 2 jumps so now I will try it with 3 fences. See picture below for plank exercise laid out on far side of arena prior to demo.

I found King Joules especially fascinating, Andrew said the horse likes to go XC behind the contact, curling his neck in, I know from experience this gives a nice light feel down the rein but with the body and legs still extended to gallop it's very hard to ride horses like this to big fences at speed, as they have no ability to extend any further or to collect or shorten.

A brilliant day and huge thanks to Tattersalls Eventing Ireland who ran the facebook competition from which I won the tickets and to my friend Louise from Eventing Magazine who came along with me to share my winnings!

Another Trip To Moores Farm

Today I took Rupert, Rif Raf and Massimo to Moores farm for the clear round jumping day.

Massimo has grown up since his last visit only on Sunday and jumped beautifully round the 70cm.

Rupert who hasn't been out anywhere since November jumped everything huge to start with then did a super clear round at 90 cm. His holiday seems to have improved him further so he's looking an exciting prospect for 2015.

Rif Raf jumped enthusiastically round 90 cm and then round 1m. Can't see her settling for dressage this year, she loves her jumping far too much!!!

I came home smiling, they are all very much still babies yet they gave me such a good feeling.

Alvescot Massimo at Moores Farm SJ

Today I have been reminded why I love training young horses so much. I took Massimo to Moores Farm for BS clear round club jumping. Despite several small hairy ponies flying round the warm arena on a very windy day, Massimo behaved beautifully.

The course was lovely it was only 55 cm but it had spreads and uprights, with lots of interesting little fillers. He was very unspooky and extremely brave. He jumped round clear twice with a very calm bold confident attitude. He is just about cantering a course now, canter a bit ragged at times but he is making super progress.

His round can be viewed by clicking on the link below.
